Algebra and Trigonometry: Structure and Method: Book 2

  • McDougal Littell

Algebra is to take concrete things and make them abstract. To simplify. Then we can manipulate that abstraction and discover new meanings about the concrete world.

This year we will be studying how to translate words, ideas and things into the language of mathematics.

Grading

  • Daily Work:
    • These will be the daily question sets that you will complete in class and at home.
    • Purpose: Their purpose is to help you identify what you know and where you need help. They are also intended let you practice what you've learned so you can refine and improve your knowledge.
    • Presentation: Each day you will present this work to your teacher.
      • You must show all of your work. Clearly writing out the steps you took to solve problems will help you identify any mistakes you made, and greatly aid your teacher in identifying what you need help with.
      • Start each assignment on a new page, with your name and the date at the top.
      • While we are all concerned about our impact on the environment, and will do what we can to save paper, clarity is of utmost importance. Skip a line between each question and use as much space as you need.
    • Your grade for the daily work will not depend on you having all the correct answers the first time.
      • Checking your work:
        • Check over your work if you find that you have the wrong answer to a question. Many times you will find that the cause of the problem is just a small mistake in arithmetic that's easy to correct.
        • If you can't find the problem, or realize that you're not sure about what you are expected to do, check with other sources: your textbook, your peers and your teacher are all good resources. Peers are often the best source of help because they can often explain things in ways that are easier for you to understand. Be willing to ask for help and to help others when they need it.
        • Once you have figured out the issues you were having difficulty with, redo all erroneous questions. These corrections should be handed in on the day following the assignment's due date (or by arrangement with you teacher).
  • Chapter Tests
    • You will receive a test at the end of each chapter.
    • If you score above 70% you will need to correct all incorrect problems and turn the corrections in on the following school day.
    • If you score below 70% you will need to retake the test after doing your corrections, discussing the test with your teacher, and completing any additional assignments given.
  • Exams
    • There will be four exams, given at the end of each quarter.
    • If you score above 70% you will need to correct all incorrect problems and turn the corrections in as your first, off-block math assignment.
    • If you score below 70% you will need to retake the test after doing your corrections, discussing the test with your teacher, and completing any additional assignments given. This may include assignments to be completed over the winter and summer breaks.
